RBI Recovery Agent Rules From 1 January 2027: Calls Only 8 AM to 7 PM

Has a recovery agent ever called you early in the morning, late at night, or spoken to you in a threatening way? From 1 January 2027, that will be a clear rule break. The RBI issued new conduct directions for loan recovery agents on 6 August 2026, and lenders must follow them from the new year. Here are your new rights, in simple words.

What Changes From 1 January 2027?

  • Calls and visits only between 8 AM and 7 PM. No early-morning pressure calls. No late-night visits. A call outside this time is itself a violation — note the time and number.
  • No abusive or threatening language. Agents cannot shout, insult or threaten you or your family.
  • No public shaming. Agents cannot post your photo, video or loan details online or in public to embarrass you into paying.
  • Recovery calls will be recorded. A recorded call is evidence. It protects honest borrowers and keeps agencies in control, because the conversation can be reviewed later.
  • The lender is responsible. It is no longer just “agent behaviour”. If the agency breaks the rules, the bank or NBFC that hired the agency is answerable to the RBI.

We explained the earlier rules in our RBI recovery agent rules guide. The 2027 directions make those protections stricter and clearer.

What Agents Can Still Do

These rules protect your dignity, not your debt. Agents can still:

  • Call and visit you between 8 AM and 7 PM to ask for repayment
  • Send notices and reminders by post, email and SMS
  • Start legal recovery steps if you do not pay
  • Report your missed payments to CIBIL, which will lower your credit score

If you truly cannot pay, talk to your lender early and ask for restructuring or a settlement in writing. Silence makes things worse.

What To Do If an Agent Breaks the Rules

  1. Stay calm and note everything. Write down the date, time, phone number and what was said. Save call recordings and screenshots.
  2. Complain to the lender first. Every bank and NBFC has a grievance officer. Give your complaint in writing and keep the complaint number.
  3. Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman. If the lender does not solve it in 30 days, file a free complaint at cms.rbi.org.in.
  4. Go to the police for threats. Threats, abuse or shaming are not “recovery” — they are offences. File a complaint at your local police station or cybercrime.gov.in for online shaming.

Conclusion

From 1 January 2027, recovery agents must work inside fixed hours, speak respectfully, and keep calls recorded — and your lender is responsible for their behaviour. Know the rules, record violations, and complain in writing. At the same time, remember the other side: your EMI duty does not change. If you are struggling, contact your lender before the agents come calling.
